In today's fast-paced world, finding true fulfillment can be a challenge. However, a fulfilling life is within everyone's grasp. By understanding and implementing these 19 keys to fulfillment, you can embark on a journey toward a more prosperous, satisfying existence.
We live in a fast-paced world and often compare ourselves with others! People are constantly looking for a successful life on every platform you watch or listen to.
While there are those whose vocation is to make you believe in absolute hard work, on the opposite bench, others advocate for IKIGAI and live by vibrations and manifestation.
Whatever side you are on, I'm sure you are striving to live a fulfilled life. I found myself challenged by wanting to do what I love rather than having to work hard in a job that I hated!
Sitting down and reflecting on what was the most important thing to do, I concluded that I wanted to live a fulfilling life. But what does that even mean?
Meaning of fulfillment
Fulfillment is a deeply personal concept that varies significantly from person to person. It's not a fixed destination but rather a continuous journey of self-discovery and growth, unique to each individual.
While common factors are associated with fulfillment, each person's path to achieving it is unique. Living a fulfilling life can be summed up as living in a sense of wholeness, happiness, worth, balance, and one's impact on this Earth.
It's about living life fully, being true to oneself, and being free from regrets and disappointment. For me, I've come to appreciate all aspects of my life, including the challenges like living with an incurable disease.
Fulfillment is about being fully alive! Sadly, people yearn for it but fall short of achieving it. Let us look at these 19 key points you may consider if you want to live a fulfilled life.
- Embrace imperfection: Perfection is an illusion, and in a world that often glorifies flawless beauty, success, and achievements, pursuing perfection can feel like a never-ending, exhausting journey. However, the true essence of self-discovery lies in embracing yourself with your imperfections and nurturing a sense of self-acceptance. Your vulnerability becomes a source of strength. Embrace your flaws and imperfections, for they make you unique and authentic.
- Resilience and perseverance: are 2 essential qualities that can help you overcome challenges and achieve goals. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adversity, while perseverance is the determination to continue striving toward your goals despite obstacles.
- Practice gratitude: Cultivate a grateful heart. Even in difficult times, there is always something to be thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus from what's lacking to what's abundant in your life. Pause! Look around you; do you see all the things you could be grateful for? It's long gone the time I used to ask, "Why me?"
- Choose kindness: Kindness means being friendly and warm-hearted. It can also mean being helpful or showing empathy. It may mean doing nice things without any expectation. Being kind in words and deeds can uplift others and nourish your soul. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH BEING NICE!
- Embrace change: Change is inevitable if you seek to grow or heal! It's an integral part of life. It's a sign of open-mindedness and willingness to do things differently. Embrace it as an opportunity for transformation and adaptation. I had to change how I thought about myself and how others perceived me. I had to change from being a victim to a creator of my desires.
- Strive for balance: Balance of work, family, relationships, health, and leisure is crucial in pursuing a fulfilling life. Balance fosters harmony and well-being, reducing overwhelm, stress, or anxiety.
- Trusting yourself, your instincts, and your intuition is a powerful tool for empowerment and confidence. Deep down, you know what's best for you. Listen to that inner voice and have faith in your decisions. I repeat this GPS daily (I am Guided, Protected, and Supported).
- Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend in need. Be aware of your thoughts and self-talk, and avoid being judgemental. Treat yourself with respect and be gentle without harsh criticism.
- Embrace failure: Failure is not the opposite of success; it's a stepping stone toward it. See failure as a stepping stone on your road to success, offering an invaluable opportunity to grow rather than as a stumble from which you cannot recover. Shift your mindset from performance to purpose; this can help you understand why things didn't work out as expected.
- Live in the present: We live two lives: life in our thoughts and life as we experience it in the present moment. Practicing meditation can help you focus on real-life experiences instead of the thoughts and worries in your head. Embrace the present moment fully, for it is where life truly unfolds.
- Find joy in simple things: Happiness is often found in simple pleasures like a warm embrace, a beautiful sunset, a heartfelt laugh, or a stranger's smile. Research shows that people who find joy in small, everyday moments are happier than those who only seek happiness from significant events. To find happiness in the simple things, be present by paying attention to your surroundings and senses. Every evening before I sleep, I ask myself, What was good today? What made me laugh or happy today?"
- Keep learning: Knowledge is eternal. Never cease learning. It expands your horizons and enriches your life. Your experiences shape your brain and change as you learn new things throughout your lifespan. Embrace new experiences, challenge yourself, and stay curious about the world around you. Learning new things helps grow new neurons in your brain.
- Connect with others: Nurture meaningful connections with family, friends, and community. Love and belonging are essential for a fulfilling life.
- Believe in yourself: You are capable of more than you can imagine. Believe in your strengths, talents, and potential to create a life of purpose and fulfillment. Think positively and avoid belittling yourself at all costs. I struggled with self-doubts for many years, which hindered me from living fully and freely.
- Let go of: Holding onto grudges only weighs you down. Forgive yourself(and others ONLY if you feel the need). Practice self-compassion toward your own experiences and related feelings. Whenever possible, let go of resentment and embrace inner peace. When I stopped viewing myself as a victim, I realized that I had to let go of my past that was holding me back from moving forward.
- Remember your worth: You deserve love, respect, and happiness. Remember your inherent worthiness as a human being. Create healthy boundaries with others, especially when you aren't comfortable in some relationships.
- Contribute or give back: Life makes a lot of sense when you can contribute to something good or give your valuable time to the community.
- Living your purpose: Do what you love. Your purpose can also be your job. Do it wholeheartedly.
- Spiritual growth: Involves a deep connection within, with others, and with your Maker. Whether through meditation, prayer, yoga, or simply spending time in nature, spiritual growth provides a sense of purpose, meaning, and inner peace. It can help you develop compassion, empathy, and a greater understanding of your place in the world, making you feel a sense of belonging and fulfillment.
Even though life comes with challenges, fulfillment is about living a life of purpose and satisfaction. It's about your vision and dreams and living in complete alignment and flow with your values.
It's important to note that fulfillment is a dynamic process that can evolve over time. There's no one-size-fits-all formula; what fulfills one person may not suit you. It's a personal journey.
